Benefits of Sesame Oil

Maruhon’s Commitment

We only use sesame seeds that have passed all of our nearly 500 inspection items. Our sesame oils are made using and an age-old traditional extraction method without the use of any chemical solvent.

Untoasted Sesame Oil

This is an oil produced by extracting oil from the sesame seeds without roasting them, resulting in an oil which contains none of the characteristic sesame color or aroma. It can be used in any kind of Japanese, Western, or Chinese dishes when the flavor of the ingredients needs to take center stage. This sesame oil also helps reduce the harshness and acrid flavors of the ingredients and softens their acidity.

Toasted Sesame Oil

This oil is extracted from carefully selected sesame seeds that have been lightly toasted, and is known for its gentle aroma and deep flavor. In addition to giving a rich flavor to sautéed foods, it also can be used as a seasoning. For instance, you can add it to tofu or miso soup to enjoy a gentle hint of the characteristic sesame taste.

How are Maruhon Sesame oils produced?

Sesame oils by Maruhon are made by extracting the oils in a traditional way without the use of any chemical solvents. Here is the six step Maruhon process for producing our sesame oils.

Sourcing

1

Sourcing

We gather choice sesames from around the world in pursuit of safe raw ingredients. To achieve this, it is best to check their safety first-hand from the sesame farms to the distribution channels. Our members of staff literally travel around the world to Asia, Africa, and South America to source delicious sesame.

Sorting

2

Sorting

Sesames that have been checked for quality on site are shipped to Japan and transported to our Takemoto factory for sorting and to remove sand and debris.

Toasting (Taikou)

3

Toasting (Taikou)

Taihaku and Taikou Sesame Oils are produced differently. Sesames for Taikou Sesame Oil are toasted at low heat. Sesame oil’s unique nuttiness is produced by toasting.

Extraction

4

Extraction

Raw sesames for Taihaku Sesame Oil and toasted sesames for Taikou Sesame Oil are pressure-extracted. The technique is known as traditionally pressed extraction method. This method is time consuming, but very important to the Maruhon process.

Distillation

5

Distillation

Taihaku Sesame Oil is distilled to remove its excess color and aroma. This process produces the Taihaku sesame oil with a light flavor and aroma, while maximizing the umami of sesame.

Filtering and bottling
